Starfield

It was probably surprising to see Bethesda unveil a new game — and one set in space, at that. Fans worried about multiplayer getting in the way of a quality single-player story looking at you, Fallout 76 should rest easy. The team is currently working on the game, focusing on their vision, and will optimize afterward. Speaking of next generation, the question of whether Starfield will be running on a new and improved engine has been on the minds of Bethesda fans since its announcement. This might be an immediate turnoff to some, but when you consider the engine has evolved tremendously since , it might as well be something totally new. Then when you go to Starfield , even more of it changes, and then Elder Scrolls VI , which is really out on the horizon, even more of it changes. We do know parts of Starfield are already playable as of E3 That was two years ago, so the game is likely in even better shape now. It has our DNA in it. Bethesda was actually reluctant to reveal the game so early but, as Howard explained during an interview with NoClip , fans had already suspected the team was working on Starfield , following its trademark filing in

Obsidian also developed the isometric RPG Pillars of Eternity and its sequel Deadfire, which actually lend their settings to Avowed, making for a kind of spiritual successor even if it ditches the isometric perspective.

Bethesda's fall from grace

We may not know much about Starfield, but by goodness are we excited. Bethesda's upcoming single-player RPG set in outer space marks the gaming giant's first new IP for 25 years. But just what is the game about? And, more importantly, when will we actually be able to play it? During the game's shock announcement at E3 , Bethesda boss Todd Howard called Starfield "our next-generation, single-player epic". However, Bethesda wouldn't divulge any more details apart from a short teaser trailer announcing the game and showing off its logo - and we haven't heard much about it since. However that hasn't stopped us from boarding the hype train with a first-class ticket. There's nothing more exciting than whetting your appetite for a new game by future gazing or star gazing in this case. So, in that spirit, we've searched the galaxy to bring you the latest news and rumors on Starfield. Here's everything you need to know.

Obsidian vs Bethesda

Starfield is Bethesda's first original RPG in 25 years, and it's set in space. That is almost everything we know about this mysterious project, which the studio has been talking about internally for a decade. There are a few minor details to be gleaned from comments Bethesda has made, and the teaser trailer that Bethesda put out at E3 in Other than that, the latest we've heard on Starfield is Todd Howard telling everyone to be patient at E3 We've gathered all of the scant information around about Starfield below. Here's everything we know about Bethesda's next RPG. The release date hasn't been announced yet, and don't expect it any time soon. Bethesda just released Fallout 76 in late , and Todd Howard hinted to Gamespot that the game might not ship on this generation of consoles. Before E3 , Todd Howard cautioned during an interview with IGN that although Starfield is Bethesda's priority rather than Elder Scrolls 6 which we are also eagerly awaiting fans will need to be patient. Bethesda's E3 teaser trailer is all we have seen of the game so far.

Bethesda's E3 teaser trailer is all we have seen of the game so far. It shows the sun cresting the atmosphere of a desert planet, and it shows a space station. The rugged design and solar panels imply a realistic sci-fi tone more akin to Gravity than Mass Effect.

We are actually a camera floating in space in this clip. You can see flecks of ice on the lens. As the sun catches the camera we see a word written on our own device reflected on the lens. It shows a logo and a partial word: constellation? A few moments later a cosmic tear opens up behind the station and appears to gobble it up. A cool space cataclysm perhaps, or a really colourful warp effect. The last two times we've heard about Starfield have been around E3 in both and If we do hear more about it this year—and we hope to—Bethesda's pre-show presentation will likely be the place for it.

There isn't a release date yet, but Todd Howard says that the project has moved out of pre-production and is currently in a playable state internally. The teaser shown at E3 was mostly designed to give us a sense of the game's atmosphere. Everything we know about Starfield so far is leaking out in bits from interviews with Todd Howard.

It's different, but if you sit down and play it you would recognize it as something we made if that makes sense? It has our DNA in it. It has things that we like. Howard also added this: "But it has a lot of new systems we've been thinking about for a while that fit that kind of game really well. Starfield shouldn't be confused for a rocket engineering sim, though. It's not clear how this inspiration will manifest, but Howard did mention that Helium 3—a speculative fuel for nuclear fusion—could be the isotope used to fuel Starfield's ships, or at least is something to be debated.

From this info and the original teaser trailer, it's reasonable to assume that Starfield's aesthetic will stick closer to realism instead of the sleek far-off future crafts we often see in sci-fi media.
